Lily Coleman and Olivia Jones,(reserve) were part of the South East team who won the bronze medal.

Lily had an excellent competition and finished 29th overall out of 57, with three of her scores counting towards the team score.

She scored an amazing 13.000 on beam which was not only the highest score for the south east, but the 9th highest score of the day out of 228 scores.(57 girls all doing 4 pieces).

Senior Womens Team Gym
Posted on 16/11/2008 14:45:34 by Tanya
The Senior Womens Team-Gym team qualified to represent GB at the Euros back in April when they became the British Champions for the second year in a row.

Over the last 6 months the girls have worked hard to add to their difficulty and stand with their heads held high next to countries such as Denmark,Finland and Sweden who have amazing TG programmes and over the past 10 years have dominated Team Gym, a relatively new discipline to gymnastics.

The team arrived in Ghent on Tuesday spending the next two days training in the competition arena, which holds over 3000 spectators!

The day of the qualifiers the girls were clearly nervous, having to open the competition on the floor. They danced to a 50`s theme, which made the audience stand up and take notice of this new team from GB.

Next up was tumble and, with only one mistake, the girls made many more people notice. In Team Gym, gymnasts perform very difficult tumbles, with other gymnasts tumbling very closely in front and behind, adding even more risk to already big skills.

Next up was trampette, our weakest piece. The girls have worked hard to add in a double round - 3 double fronts followed,(closely)by 3 half-in-back-outs in pike. They all stuck!
They then finished on double twists and again they all stuck and ran out to cheers from the audience.

Before we went out to Ghent we didn`t have a goal to make the finals, just to go and look strong - which the girls did. But they did better than that. They were the 7th Highest country.
In previous Euros, the top 8 went through to the finals, but this time it was only the top 6 -- we missed it by one place!!

Some girls thought they were too old to carry on at 16 - 22, but with teams of 40+ only just retiring, the girls are now aiming to make the final 6 in two years time.

Congratulations girls, and a big thank you to everyone who helped us raise the money to get there,by buying cakes and raffle tickets.

On the 25th and 26th October, Tolworth had a team at the Rushmoor Rosebowl International Competition. There were National teams - GB, South Africa, Israel,Canada - regional teams, county and club teams but Tolworth came 7th overall, beating several regional and county teams. Individually Megan Thomson was placed 13th overall out of 97 competitors, qualified for the floor final and was reserve for vault and bar finals.
Alice Mathews also did well individually and qualified for the vault final.

In the apparatus finals the following day, Alice came 6th beating tough competition. In the floor final, Megan had a fall but still managed to come 7th. Then, unexpectedly Megan was called up to compete on bars.

Going into the final, she was lying in 11th place, but with an outstanding routine she finished in 4th place beating 2 GB team gymnasts.

Well done also to:

Sarah Thomson with her new bar routine which was excellent

Lily Peake with a minor injury, completed her bar routine equally well.

Lily Coleman, who was a young substitue for an injured Caroline Jones.

Olivia Jones, who competed in the Allstars team at the age of 9, and beat many older gymnasts.

On the 24th September the squad set out for a trip to Portugal for the Loule Cup. Meeting very early in the morning and after finding somewhere to have breakfast they boarded their flight.
No time was wasted and shortly after arriving their first training session was underway!

The second day was training of full routines on competition trampolines and getting used to the surroundings of the arena. After training they were all able to relax with a quick dip in the pool !

It was another early start on competition day, having to be back at the arena for 9:00am. It was a good start with all girls jumping very well, especially Jess.M. who finished in 12th place and Grace who finished in 6th place making it to the final the following day.

A small celebration was allowed that night, but it was back the next day to support Grace in her final.

Grace jumped extremely well and moved up to finish in 5th place.

The experience of the competition was fantastic, and all the girls had a great time. The squad hope to return to Portugal next year.

On the 12th October Amy went to Gillingham for the first competition of the new grading system. Amy jumped well in the over 15 girls regional D, gaining a point which enables her to move up to the next grade which is National C.

Amy achieved a personal best overall score.

Well done Amy!!

South East Regional Competition
Posted on 29/09/2008 12:32:41 by Tanya
On 20th & 21st Sept some of the Girls Development and Girls Elite Development squads competed in the South East Regional Voluntary Age Groups competition.

Emmeline Anghileri competed in the "In Age Level 5". This is her biggest competition to date and she competed very well with only a couple of mistakes.

Mille Kennard competed in the "In Age Level 4".
Millie was competing against some girls who have been training for over 3 years. Millie has only been training for 1.
She competed very well on three pieces, but made mistakes on beam. Even with the mistakes she still came a very respectful 7th. (Without the mistakes, Millie would have medaled!)

Olivia Jones and Lily Coleman competed in the "In Age Level 3".
Neither had their best competition to date, but even with big mistakes they came 5th & 4th respectively.

This means they have both qualified to compete in the National Finals in November.

Phoebe Gibson competed in the "Out of Age Level 3".
She competed amazingly and came 3rd. Very well done Phoebe, the star of the weekend!!!

Megan Thomson and Lily Peake of the Senior Women`s Team achieved great results this weekend at the British Championships.

Megan came a fantastic 13th overall, and 5th on floor which secured her a place in the floor final on Sunday where she came 7th.

Within the junior section, to come within the top 20 is excellent, so to reach 13th place overall and 5th in the Floor gaining a 7th place in the floor final is a phenomenal achievement.

Well done to Megan`s team mate Lily Peake, who competed for the first time at the British Championships and came 24th overall executing a terrific vault.

Well done girls!!

To get to the British Championships gymnasts need to qualify over 4 arduous years.

Some of Tolworths younger members of the boys squad represented the South East Region at the National Finals back in May.

This was the first time the club has had more than one boy in the top six at the Elite Grade Finals, which is fantastic.

British Male Juniors are now ranked the top team in Europe ( beating Russia and all the former Eastern block) showing the high standard achieved by the boys.

Elite Grades, Under 9:

Sam Morey = 6th Place

Elite Grades, Under 11:

Jack Neill = also 6th Place.

We also had gymnasts from the under 14 age group compete in the Club Grades. A special " Congratulations" to Ross Morey who improved his rank from 23rd to 9th in one year !

Primary 2, Under 11:

Hector Kennedy-Dyson = 29th Place, Team 5th Place

Intermediate 2, Under 13:

William Wilson = 25th Place, Team 4th place

Tolworth`s gymnasts achieved excellent results at the Poole Open on 1st June.
In the Espoir section (12-13 years) Caroline Jones competed secure routines all round. She had no falls but one costly mistake on floor, suffering a 1.5 deduction.
She was very pleased to be able to use this competition to prepare for next week`s British Espoirs Championships.

In the Junior section (14-15 years), Lily Peake competed an excellent bar routine, scoring 9.65, and a good floor and vault, winning the gold medal for the all-round competition.
Sarah Thomson had an unfortunate fall from bars, but otherwise competed well all-round, gaining the silver medal.

Congratulations to Alice Mathews, Megan Thomson, Sarah Thomson, Lily Peake and Caroline Jones for the club`s first appearance at the British Teams Championships on 24th May.

Megan and Alice competed excellent bar routines (12.35 and 11.3 respectively), as was Alice`s vault (13.35) and Megan`s floor (12.55).

Caroline, having just come back from a minor injury, competed well and this was a good preparation for the British Espoirs (12-13 years) Championships in two weeks time.

Lily had a secure beam routine and Sarah, also just back into competition, helped the team secure 15th place overall. Had it not been for a couple of costly errors on beam, the team would have finished in a higher position.

Congratulations Chris O`Connor
Posted on 18/05/2008 19:37:40 by Tanya
Chris O`Connor, a member of our mens squad, represented Ireland in Lausanne Switzerland last weekend in his first Junior Europeans appearance

Chris battled admirably against injury and against other competitors who were at least three years his senior.

Out of 147 competitors, Chris, aged 14, was the second youngest in an event for ages 18 and under. He was set to compete on all apparatus but unfortunately suffered an injury to his heel during training the day before. Consequently Chris couldn`t do floor, vault or high bar due to the high landings.

However, Chris competed well on pommel horse, rings and parallel bars. His best ranking was 80th out of 116 on pommel horse – a fine start at this level of competition and with age on his side.

Chris has gained valuable experience for two years` time when he`ll get the opportunity to compete in this event again.

Also many congratulations to the Great Britain team, who won the event, beating even Russia for the first time ever!

Mens Squad News
Posted on 28/04/2008 15:07:17 by Tanya
Congratulations to our Mens Artistic Squad who competed last weekends in Huelva, Spain

All the boys finished in the top half of the rankings, crowned by a superb performance from Minesh Desai, who took overall Bronze medal position.

Tolworth also proved their dominance on Pommel.
Minesh came first, Chris O`Connor second and Ross Morey fourth, all beating a Spanish National team member, who was 8th in the world on high bar.

Minesh also took Silver on P-Bars, but was unlucky to miss out on the medals on High Bar by just 0.1, even though he was the only gymnast of the day to catch his “release-and-catch” move.

Alex Pollard had his best competition for a long time, coming 9th overall, whilst Ed Figueiredo had an unlucky day, but demonstrated some improved skills, which will help him to do better next time.

Well done to all the gymnasts

The Primary`s and Juniors both came 7th in their very tough categories. The scores from 4th - 8th in both categories were very close. Both teams are showing vast improvements and over the next few years will be teams to look out for!!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL TEAMS, AND THANK YOU TO ALL THE SUPPORTERS THAT CAME DOWN TO CHEER US ALL ON.

Megan & Sarah achieve their goals
Posted on 14/04/2008 12:01:23 by Tanya
Megan and Sarah travelled up to Newcastle and took part in the British Schools Championships on the 16th March. They both competed new moves for the first time, but both were also competing after various injuries. Megan`s last competition was 9 months ago and Sarah is currently working through an injury so only competed on beam and floor.

Both girls did very well. Whilst Sarah was unable to gain a high ranking, because of doing only two of the apparatus, she went clean on beam, doing her new mount for the first time.

Megan came 13th overall (out of 50) and only just missed out on selection for the UK Schools Games in August. She did exceptionally well on the A-bars – sucessfully competing her Tkatchev for the first time, giving her a start value of 4.8. She is now training on a routine with a 5.1 start value (comparable with some national squad gymnasts).

Megan also competed double pike and 2 ½ twist on floor for the first time, finishing with a score of 12.6. She is now training hard, along with Alice Mathews, Lily Peake, Caroline Jones and Sarah, for the British Teams Championships in May and the Women`s Artistic British Championships in June.

She is now a valued member of our Senior Team Gym squad who are the current British Champions in this discipline.

As with all money we have raised recently, this will go towards the new matting for the Beam, Pommel and P-Bars areas. A project that will cost over £10,000.

Acro Squad News
Posted on 12/03/2008 19:16:22 by Tanya
As we approach the end of another competition season,Tolworth Acro team can look back on another successful year.

Starting with wins at Bagshot and then at the Regional Championships.Tolworth Acro team won trophies for the Grade 1 pair and the Prep Trio.

The team have just started to work on tumbling as this now forms an important part of the National Development Plan 6 grade requirements.

In November, the team came 3rd on two occasions, 4th, 5th and 7th at various compettion levels,an excellent start to the competition season. With that they had the confidence to enter the National Qualifier for the first time with 3 gymnasts. This being their first attempt in this competition, all gymnasts tumbled well and although no medals were won there is always next year.

Unfortunatley, the Surrey championships were cancelled. However, the team continued to prepare for the National Qualifier at Rushmore. This is a high level competition with clubs from all over the region competing for a place in the finals at Fenton.
The team were affected by absences and illness, but those able to compete did well with the highest placing at 5th for our grade 1 pair, out of 21 entries.

A period of revaluation is now taking place, with re-testing and new targets given. The pairs and trios are regrouped and many new skills are to be learnt.
